What Is a Shade Coffee Farm and Where Are They?

Most of us don’t put too much thought into the cup of coffee we’re drinking beyond its taste, aroma, and ability to give us that pick-me-up that we need in the morning and throughout the day. However, that cup of coffee you’re drinking may provide a variety of additional benefits, especially in regard to biodiversity conservation efforts in El Salvador.

El Salvador produces what are known as shade coffee farms throughout the country. As a matter of fact, approximately 90% of the coffee grown in El Salvador is grown in shade plantations, and roughly 80% of the forests in El Salvador are linked to shade coffee plantations. What does all that mean? Think of it this way: approximately 10% of the country of El Salvador is forest cover, 80% of which is natural, or what is known as “cultivated shade cover” that provides some of the best locations for coffee growers. For that reason, this type of coffee farm is essential to El Salvador’s efforts at conservation of biodiversity in their country.

What difference does it make? Knowledge and education means everything, especially when it comes to conserving our natural resources. Since the 1700s, coffee growers in Latin America utilize cultivated or natural forestation until the 1970s. Unfortunately, due to the development of new coffees and prevalent concerns regarding coffee leaf rust disease, an alarming majority of coffee farms in El Salvador literally cut down their shade forests and began to grow coffee under open sunlight. Sure, this offered bigger crops, but it also wrecked havoc on biodiversity in the region and affected a variety of migratory birds as well as great losses in natural habitats.
