Some say that coffee is addictive, but it depends on what you mean by the word ‘addictive.’
Okay, we know these word games have been played before – but it’s true. While WebMD states that there is some truth to whether or not coffee is addictive, it has more to do with the caffeine found in the brew rather than the coffee itself. According to Smithsonian Magazine, a whopping 80 percent of Americans drink caffeine daily!
Caffeine is a commonly ingested stimulant; in fact, it’s found in plenty of other things we enjoy such as chocolate, soda and tea. It’s even an active ingredient in leading over-the-counter pain medications and headache relievers. The stimulant has an effect on the nervous system, slightly elevating blood flow, oxygen levels and heart rate – but it does not affect a person in a harmful way that other addictive drugs do, such as through physical, economical and social impacts.
In addition to the caffeine content of coffee, many people appreciate and crave the taste and aroma provided through a freshly brewed cup or ground beans. Positive memories and feelings are often linked to the wonderful fragrance, encouraging people to continue with a coffee habit over time. The sensory organs appreciate the flavor and aroma of coffee, and when combined with the caffeine levels, create a magical cup of joe that leaves you wanting cup after cup each morning. While caffeine is something that various people might want to avoid, experts aren’t too concerned with caffeine dependence and don’t consider it a serious addiction.
